The fascination with the exotic and the “other” pervaded the mid-1800s. Alexander Glazunov and Hugo Wolf, inspired by different areas of Europe (Spain, Turkey, Austria, Hungary, Italy), wrote pieces to showcase the flair and energy evocative of a trip abroad. Ernest Bloch instead took to disparate lands: the snow and ice of the Arctic continent, the scenic mountain tops of the Alps, and the lively dances in the South Pacific islands of the Tongan archipelago. What about galvanizing sounds from a land of subordinate gravity? Margaret Brower’s Mountains of the Moon treks into a legendary mountain in east Africa at the source of the Nile River, creating an aura of mystery that transports the listener through distant time, space, and energy.
